kW and kWh are different

Kilowatts (kW) measure power at a point in time; kilowatt hours (kWh) measure energy used over time. A 2 kW heater running for one hour uses about 2 kWh. Your supplier multiplies consumed kWh by the tariff unit rate to calculate the usage portion of the bill.

Why annual kWh is useful

Annual consumption smooths out seasonal differences. Gas usage can be much higher in winter, while electricity patterns vary with appliances, electric heating, EV charging and working from home. A full-year figure therefore makes tariff comparison more meaningful than a single month.

Where to find it

Look at your annual statement, online account or recent bills. Smart-meter customers may also have detailed consumption data, but use the supplier’s billing figures for the comparison if you want to stay consistent with how charges are calculated.

Estimating when you have no history

If you have just moved home, you may need to start with a reasonable estimate. Property size, heating type and occupancy can help, but treat the first quote as provisional. Once actual usage becomes available, update your comparison.

Turn usage into an annual cost

Multiply annual kWh by the unit rate, then add 365 days of standing charges. Repeat for each fuel and add the totals. This simple formula is more transparent than relying only on a supplier’s marketing headline.

Changes that can invalidate old usage

A heat pump, electric vehicle, home extension, new baby, additional resident or switch from gas cooking to electric can materially alter energy demand. If your household changed recently, adjust expectations rather than assuming last year will repeat exactly.

Why annual kWh beats monthly spend

Monthly pounds can be distorted by Direct Debit smoothing, account credit or debt. Annual kWh is a cleaner comparison input because it measures energy consumed. Use the same kWh figure across supplier quotes so the annual-cost comparison is consistent.
