Smart meters can send consumption readings to suppliers automatically, reducing the need for manual readings. They can also support time-of-use tariffs and detailed consumption information. However, the tariff price is still set by the supplier and depends on the rates and terms you agree to.

It is sensible to record the meter reading around the switch date even when the meter normally communicates automatically. A photograph gives you an independent reference if the final bill from the old supplier and opening bill from the new supplier do not line up.
Check tariff compatibility
If you use Economy 7, a time-of-use tariff or smart prepayment mode, confirm that the new tariff supports the setup you want. A standard single-rate comparison can be misleading if your existing consumption is split across peak and off-peak periods.

The in-home display is useful for awareness, but your supplier’s billing data is the record used for charging. When checking a new tariff, compare the rates in the contract and bills rather than relying on a real-time display alone.
