Before you start
Check whether your current tariff has an exit fee or a fixed-term end date. Gather recent electricity and gas usage, current unit rates and standing charges. This gives you a baseline for deciding whether a new tariff is genuinely better.

Use your postcode and household information to obtain the rates available for your home. Compare the annual cost using the same consumption figure across suppliers. If you are using a referral code, read the current campaign terms before starting so you do not accidentally miss a qualifying step.
During sign-up
Check the tariff name, payment method, contract length and contact details. Enter the referral code where requested rather than assuming it can be added later. Save the confirmation page or email.
Around the switch date
Take meter readings and retain photographs where practical. Smart meters often send readings automatically, but keeping your own record can still be useful if the opening and closing readings are disputed.
After the switch
Check the final bill from the old supplier and the opening bill from the new one. Verify that the readings align, any old credit is returned correctly and the new Direct Debit is set at a sensible level. Contact the relevant supplier promptly if something looks wrong.
After the switch
Check that the opening meter reading used by the new supplier matches the closing reading used by the old supplier, confirm your Direct Debit amount, and verify that the tariff name and rates on the first bill match what you accepted. Referral rewards may have additional payment or eligibility conditions before they are applied.
A five-minute pre-switch file
Save a screenshot or PDF of the tariff summary, referral or cashback terms, date of application and any confirmation number. Keep your final old-supplier bill and your first new-supplier bill. These records are useful if the tariff, meter reading or referral credit later needs to be checked.
